Migrant schools in Shanghai suburbs

by Michael Zhang

To change the world, one village at a time!

The survey seminar on migrant schools was organized by Loving Heart Association on January 21 in Jin Cai "0 "( " "Middle School in Pudong and was attended by some 100 people including representatives from Shanghai's migrant schools. The survey was partly financed by Flextronics and carried out by senior high school students from 14 districts of Shanghai.

Teachers in the migrant schools are low paid but their work is heavy. Most of the teachers have low qualifications and the turnover is high. 40% of those surveyed indicated that they did not want to continue to teach.

One principal who moved from a local school to a school for migrants said that her first impression of the students in migrant schools could be summed up in there words:"dirty, unruly under-achievers".

Most migrant schools do not have computers or multimedia equipment, while some have old or donated ones which no longer work. The migrant schools lack libraries, clinics, good blackboards, sports equipment and even decent toilets.

Considering this, Hua Qiao Foundation(HQF) really wants to do something to help them.
