Visiting GOL sponsored families in XuYi

During the Spring Festival, I visited 17 families sponsored by RCS (Rotary Club of Shanghai) and H2H (Shanghai Heart to Heart Foundation) in Xu Yi County Jiang Su Province(江苏省盱眙县). In Xu Yi, 89 children with congenital heart diseases have been sponsored from 2003 to 2008. So I'd like share my experiences visiting them.

GOL is the written abbreviation of Gift of Life. It focuses on sponsoring underprivileged families of children with congenital heart diseases in Mainland China. Heart Diseases are among the most common birth defects and are the leading cause of birth deaths. Children with congenital heart diseases can not do exercises like the normal children and it's easier for them to get flu because of poor physical fitness. The medical treatment fee of congenital heart disease is very high and most families can not afford it. RCS began this program from 2003 and has saved 236 kids and their families in Mainland China until now.

A Family with a Child Suffering from Congenital Heart Disease

The boy in the picture is 16 years old. Because of congenital heart disease, he can not stand for a long time. It will be comfortable for him and his heart if he squats down. To pay for the medical treatment of his flu and other complications, his parents sold their house several years ago.

Pictures of GOL Sponsored Children and Families
Zheng Tian Tian is a 4-year-old girl. She had her heart surgery in 2007. Happy gathering of GOL and H2H sponsored families.
顾思萍,with her Godmother Christine. She was sponsored in 2005. This picture was taken in 2005 with Frank Yih and Doctor Chen Qun. Now the lovely girl is in Grade-4.

Story of Chelsea(许春芬)
Chelsea is a girl sponsored by RCS in 2003. As a little girl, she was worried that she might die of heart disease at anytime. She could not focus on studying before when she had heart disease. All she longed for was money and heart surgery. Now she is going to finish her senior school education and be busy with tests for college.

To every Rotarian, nothing is more gratifying than seeing Chelsea and other children on the way of achieving their dream. Story of Chelsea is also a wonderful manifestation as to how our sponsoring of a child's heart surgery changes their fate!
